Mr. Thornton, who spent four years diving to the site of the wreck of the Spanish galleon La Capitana Jesus Maria, which sunk in the waters off Ecuador in the mid-17th century and was recently involved in the search for Spanish gold and other treasures in the mines of the Caballo Mountains in New Mexico, died Nov. 11 of prostate cancer at his Hull home.
