Avoca hosts festival Saturday Sep 18, 2009
Six area wineries - Hickory Hill Vineyards y, Peaks of Otter Winery, Rebec Winery, Gabriele Rausse Winery, Tomahawk Mill Winery and Wintergreen Winery - will offer samples and sell their wines by the bottle. At least 20 craftsmen will be at the festival, coming from Roanoke, Amherst, Gretna, Evington, Lynch Station and other places. (Altivista Journal, VA)

Relax In Thomas Jefferson's Retirement Home May 7, 2009
The plantation originally spanned more than 4,800 acres, and in 1806 Jefferson began construction of the home atop a hill with a view of the forest and the twin Peaks of Otter at a time when many Americans didn't know what lay beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains. Two centuries later, the property now is partly surrounded by subdivisions, land and homes that the Corporation for Jefferson's Poplar Forest wants to gradually acquire so it can restore the area around the home.
