The instruments were installed on a rocky ridge in the Monterey Canyon 3,000 feet beneath the surface by scientists and engineers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute at Moss Landing, and data are already being collected. The Berkeley device is a seismometer that sends its signals to the university's seismological laboratory on the university campus, where scientists can determine the magnitude and precise location of quakes that occur west of the San Andreas Fault.
