The dramatic story of the ship - which dragged thousands of people away from the nearby Royal Easter Show - is told by Mr Kennedy in a new book, From Long Bay To Malabar: A Village By The Sea, an affectionate history of a suburb which by 1933 had been renamed after a wreck. "When you told people you came from Malabar, they'd say, 'Oh, that's the place with the jail, the sewage works and the rifle range,' " said Mr Kennedy, one of eight children.
